Background on Asbestos

Although mining for asbestos in the United States has been banned, it can still be imported from other countries and used today. The fibers in asbestos have been proven to be carcinogenic, though their effects may not always be felt or seen for nearly 10-20 years. Many building materials contain asbestos or have the potential to contain asbestos regardless of the construction date.

Testing & Regulations

People looking to purchase a home, renovate or remodel, or remediate should always hire a certified professional to conduct the required asbestos testing first. Testing must be done by a Certified Asbestos Building Inspector (CABI) and involves taking the required number of samples from the materials and having them analyzed under a microscope at an accredited laboratory for their content.

Asbestos testing is required in residential properties by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, under the Air Pollution Control Division, when greater than 32 square feet, 50 linear feet, or a55 gallon drum is exceeded. Commercial trigger levels in Colorado exist for required asbestos testing at greater than 160 square feet, 260 linear feet, or a 55 gallon drum. The CDPHE Regulation No. 8 can be referred to for more information.
